My First Book - Best Sellers

I chose The Fault in Our Stars to be my first book because everyone was reading it and I wanted to see what it was all about. I have constantly heard good reviews about it and so far the book is not what I expected. Now surprisingly I have never heard a review so when I read the first chapter the book took me for a turn. I read about a girl who survived cancer going to cancer groups to improve her depression, so far all she does is be bored and found a hot guy to hit on named Augustus. I got this book through my sister who has a huge library of books and lent it to me.

John Green has written many books Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns which have been very popular books. He has a huge following including 1.2 million on Twitter and a couple million on his YouTube channels.  His work has made him become a superstar to many readers and nerds alike. According to New York Times the book is’ “finely wrought language, beautifully drawn characters and a distinctive voice…” I think that the book to me is not that interesting. I prefer more action in my books and a little less romance. I can tell this is going to be a book that is a relationship between two characters who want to be together forever and not really a dragon-slaying, Greek God type of book. I will still read the book although I’m not that interested. I think it could be worse and hope that eventually I will grow accustomed to the love story and enjoy it.

I think this book is doing so well because it is relatable because so many people have cancer and almost everyone knows someone who is fighting it. Readers feel sympathy towards the characters and are entranced right from the beginning. The book is also about a relationship of two teens like the wildly popular play Romeo and Juliet. This book combines romance and disease and two people who don’t care about looks so much that even though they aren’t your most conventional teens they do still find love in each other.

This book is not one I typically read as I said before but I will try to find ways to understand the reader and hopefully find enjoyment.

Why I Read

I chose to read because I want to enjoy something I can't. This could be reading about wars from soldiers or teens that are demigods and have to fight for their lives. I can only read a book that I like because otherwise I get bored and stop reading. This creates problems when I read textbooks that I don't feel are interesting. If I find a book I like I finish that book in about a day if it is 500 less pages; it becomes my life.

That being said the toughest part for me is finding a book that I enjoy a lot. But when I do read I read for enjoyment which I think is the best way to read. To read for education for reading for the fact that you have to, it just gets boring. You don't get to connect to the characters if they have them. If you read a book for class you are reading for a goal and that’s what you focus on instead of the characters and plots. I feel to enjoy a book the most and get the most out of a book is to rad for enjoyment so you don’t get distracted and stressed about figurative language and symbolism.

Reading for Fun is best Because......
This website talks about how people who read more frequently for pleasure have higher tests scores due to the exposure of better vocabulary which expands. The more you read you also understand feelings and comprehension in the test questions asked so you obviously will score higher. This proves that students should also read for enjoyment so they can expand vocabulary and comprehension which will assist in not only tests but in life with other people. So ultimately reading for enjoyment is the best way because it is a win, win; you get to read for happiness and get smarter at the same time.
